Exploring Right Livelihood As A Way to Align Wealth With Your Career and Purpose

Let’s get real for a moment. In today’s world, it’s all too easy to feel trapped in the daily grind—ticking off boxes, meeting deadlines, and calling it a day. But deep down, we yearn for something more. Something meaningful. Something that fuels our souls and makes us feel alive.

As a holistic wealth coach, I’ve seen how important it is to find purpose in our work. Not just for our personal well-being, but as a foundation for building wealth in a way that feels authentic and sustainable. It’s time to pause and ask ourselves the questions that truly matter. These are the questions that can guide us toward a life filled with passion, alignment, and abundance.

The Four Questions of Purpose

To align wealth with your career and purpose, start by asking these four foundational questions:

  1. What do you love?

  2. What are you good at?

  3. What does the world need?

  4. What can you get paid for?

These aren’t just feel-good prompts—they’re a practical roadmap to discovering your purpose and creating work that resonates with your values.

What Do You Love?

Start here. What lights you up and makes time fly? Think back to your childhood passions. What activities sparked your imagination and gave you joy?

For me, the joy of helping others navigate challenges has always been my guiding light. I remember being the go-to friend as a kid, offering advice and solutions like a mini life coach. Those moments shaped my purpose today.

Take a moment to reflect. What do you love doing? Write it down—this is your foundation.

What Are You Good At?

Next, let’s uncover your strengths. What comes naturally to you? Sometimes, we overlook our unique talents, assuming they’re “not special” because they feel effortless.

For instance, my knack for organization and strategy has always been a strength. Whether it was planning group trips or creating structured routines, I thrived on turning chaos into clarity. This skill became a cornerstone of my coaching practice.

What about you? What gifts do you bring to the table? Recognizing these can unlock your potential.

What Does the World Need?

Here’s where your purpose connects to the bigger picture. What problems or issues resonate with you?

When we talk about Right Livelihood, a principle from the Buddha’s teachings, this is where we align our work with a greater good.

For me, it’s about empowering women to build financial confidence and independence. In a world that often underestimates women’s financial power, I’m determined to change the narrative. What societal needs speak to your heart? How can your passions and skills meet those needs?

What Can You Get Paid For?

Finally, let’s tackle the money question. While following your passion is vital, it’s equally important to consider how to monetize it.

For me, becoming a coach opened multiple income streams—coaching sessions, online courses, and consulting. With creativity and intention, you can find ways to align your financial goals with your passions.

Explore your options. What career paths or business opportunities excite you and feel aligned?

Right Livelihood and the Noble Eightfold Path

Let’s dive deeper into the concept of Right Livelihood, part of the Buddha’s Noble Eightfold Path.

Right Livelihood means pursuing work that is ethical, beneficial, and free from harm. It’s about aligning your career with values that promote compassion and integrity.

Here are examples of trades to avoid:

  • Dealing in weapons – Work that promotes violence contradicts compassion.

  • Exploitation of living beings – Avoid roles that harm or exploit humans or animals.

  • Dealing in intoxicants or poisons – Work that harms society creates a ripple of negativity.

By choosing work that contributes positively to the world, you not only create alignment but also find deeper fulfillment.

Overcoming Barriers to Alignment

Society often pushes us toward jobs that prioritize financial security over purpose. But here’s the truth: you deserve a career that lights you up.

If your current work feels out of sync with your values, it’s time to reassess. Ask yourself:

  • Does this work align with my purpose?

  • Am I excited to wake up and contribute?

When you align your energy with the right opportunities, everything begins to flow more naturally.

Take Action Toward Fulfillment

Even if you’re taking temporary roles to pay the bills, keep your purpose in focus. Check in regularly with your “Why” and take steps toward creating a career that reflects your values and passions.

Aligning wealth with purpose isn’t just about money—it’s about building a fulfilling, balanced life. You have the power to create a career that feels abundant, meaningful, and aligned with your true self.

It all starts with the questions: What do you love? What are you good at? What does the world need? What can you get paid for?

Take the first step today. Your journey to Right Livelihood and alignment is waiting.
